Dear Frank,
Thank you for your efforts. I am working with a Borough (Local

I have found your website very informative and helpful, but I was wondering
what your thoughts are on Weber's view of punishment i.e. that it should
not be an emotional thing due to be dangerous and that it should be professionally
administrated. This is in stark contrast to Durkheim who thought that punishment
provided a clear picture of the moral nature of social order.
I was just wondering what you thought of this area especially in regards
to Weber.
Thanking you in advance for any ideas.

thoughtfully laid out for the web.
Weber seems to suggest that there are only two routes for a person to
take; as a bureaucrat or as a dilettante.
What a dreaful vision of the future...
I think it's interesting to note the disimilarities between the bureacracies
that Weber studied and the one's we currently participate in. Most
notedly,
Weber describes that the bureaucracies were heirarchical, with information
traveling up and directives traveling down. Wouldn't he flip his lid
if he
could get a good long look at the internet? And not only that, but
how about
open source development?
Geez... if ever I was thankful for Post Modernism it was after reading

Weber's Bureaucracy - all is working now, must have just
been temporary. Sorry to bother you,
By the way, this is a great site!
Hi Dr. Elwell,
Thank you for your informative website on Weber. I was looking at your
section "In his words" and the
subsection "Bureaucracy" and came across the follwing quotation. Try
as I might, I cannot find the reference for this wonderful quote. I was
hoping you can add it to your website.
"It is horrible to think that the world could one day
be filled with nothing but those little cogs, little
men clinging to little jobs and striving toward bigger
ones--a state of affairs which is to be seen once
more, as in the Egyptian records, playing an ever
increasing part in the spirit of our present
administrative systems, and especially of its
offspring, the students. This passion for bureaucracy
...is enough to drive one to despair. It is as if in
politics. . . we were to deliberately to become men
who need "order" and nothing but order, become nervous and cowardly
if for one moment this order wavers, and helpless if they are torn away
from their total incorporation in it. That the world should know no men
but these: it is in such an evolution that we are already caught up, and
the great question is,
therefore, not how we can promote and hasten it, but what can we oppose
to this machinery in order to keep a portion of mankind free from this
parceling-out of the soul, from this supreme mastery of the bureaucratic
way of life."
Thank you so much!

Hi! I am a beginner in the field of sociology just starting on
Weber (Open University, UK). I would like to say thank you for the
above mentioned
page. I found it both informative and interesting and might,
if I have your prior permission, quote from it if necessary.
Thanks in advance,

I would just like to thank you for you sensible and informational site
describing weber and his theory of rationalization........I am running
to a deadline and have only 28 hour left to write a 3000 word essay on
how 'science is a rationalized enterprise', in relevance to Max Weber's
theory on rationalization. Your site has really helped me ...........so
I would just like to say thanks to you.

found yours and it was perfect!!
Thank you very much for your website on Max Weber. I usually just run
to our home's old encyclopedia...but this proved much better.
Thanks.

Evaluation =Yes, thank you. I was unable to find the quote I was trying
to translate from Japanese (paraphrased from the Japanese as "when we
view the religious behavior of individuals and groups as a social phenomenon,
religion appears to be a form of magic which makes it possible for the
individual to endure his or her life in this world, and
religion is related to the political in that, like politics or government,
religion contributes this-worldly profit [oriented??] magical [effects]
and the power to support a specific group or tribe.") But your site helped
me get some perspective on it.
Dear Sir:
Could you please define Verstehen for me?
Understanding. Weber used the term to refer to the social
scientist's attempt to understand both the intention and the context of
human action.
I thought the site was extremly useful as background reading to prepare
a paper to suggest a roadmap for civil service reform in Indonesia. However,
I could not find Weber's dates and would like to include them for
completeness. My reference material is in Australia.

HEY
What a great site! I have only scratched the surface I'm sure, but
what an incredible undertaking. Kudos--there ought to be more sites like
this!

wonderful to be able to do so much learning from web resources, thanks

you. I am a Ph.d student of Education and in a current search for the

Dr. Elwell,
I am a doctoral student at Walden University and an Assistant Professor
of Criminal Just. I needed information on Max Weber for research
and came across your web site, which is very helpful. Thank you for doing
a great job of building this site.
Please forgive me for the intrusion, but I could not help noticing your
name: Elwell. My husband is an Elwell. His ancestors were originally from
Scotland and mostly transitioned to Maine and to Massachusetts on the Mayflower.
How interesting that we should come in contact this way.
Thank you for allowing me to chat with you.
Cheers,
Prof. Catherine A. Elwell
Thank you for your most excellent exposition.
I have for most of my life considered myself a Marxist, being deeply
influenced by his early philosophic manuscripts dealing with alienation
as
well as insights regarding his labor theory of value.
I've always felt somewhat pinched by Marx's analysis in trying to explain
so much through its nearly exclusive focus on class expropriation of labor
as the fundamental cause of this self-estrangement. Your piece has
convinced me that Weber had deeper insights.
Thanks again - though I fear you have left me more pessimistic
than ever...(still...groping for the positive...there seems to be a swelling
of
resistance to the effects (particularly environmental) of "zweckrational"
(instrumentalism?) which at least force its examination.

Dr. Elwell,
Thank you for the information. I have updated my link. You
have a
great site!

Thanks...for the powerpoint slides on Weber and bureaucracy!
I found your site last year when a couple of first year undergraduates
were good/foolish enough to cite it - thus allowing me to fail dozens more
for cutting and pasting without referencing - or in many cases understanding,
which is always a giveaway. We use Weber in teaching organisational
behaviour to Business Studies students, so should perhaps not be surprised
if they don't have much of a handle on sociology ("Weber did not live to
see his ideal type bureaucracy, although it might work nowadays").
So, it being my turn for Weber this year, I had another look at your
site, and there are half my slides, done.
Thanks again (I will give you credit!)

Dr Elwell,
Many thanks for this web page. For the first time I think I understand
Weber! I now can't really see why it was at first so difficult to grasp!
I found this site just in time because i've got an exam tomorrow. So once
again thank you for making me understand.
Yours thankfully, R. Green. (student of JMU, England)
I found your site on Max Weber and his ideas on sociology very stimulating
reading. Weber's work was clearly in many ways prophetic of what was to
come. His ideas are interestingly resonant with the ideas of such thinkers
as Buckminster Fuller, W.Edwards Deming and a modern "social philosopher"
of another kind entirely, Robert Kiyosaki. I commend you on the quality
of
this work and look forward to sharing it with others and reading the
other sites you have prepared.

Dear Dr Elwell
Just a short note to thank you for providing this excellent resource.
I am an MBA student with the open University and am presently taking
a module on human resource management. I decided to go into more
detail on the subject of structure and strategic human resource management
so have found your page particularly helpful. Indeed, working for
a German pharmaceutical company I found myself reading the entire contents
of the site rather than just skimming through.
Once again many thanks -- I'm sure that there are many others who have
also benefited in the past and will continue to do so in the future.
Kind regards
David Montgomery
PS I will, of course, remember to acknowledge this source in my references!
Dear Professor Elwell,
This is a short note to thank you for posting the summary on Max Weber
(http://www.faculty.rsu.edu/~felwell/
Theorists/Weber/Whome.htm#Ideal).
I will be teaching an open university course where Max Weber is featured
in a Decision Making section. I found your summary easy to comprehend
and useful for introducing students to Max Weber.
Once again, thanks.
